Today’s world, with all its excitements, its adventures, and its discoveries, is moving in a very fast pace.

This can be very thrilling and fun-filled for the modern man, but this can also be exhausting to the soul.

That is exactly the reason why many people try to find comfort and solitude amidst the changes taking place in their environment. And, it is also because of this that meditation is becoming popular among many.

Meditation can be defined in different ways, but this is really a broad concept that no measure of words can totally unveil its real sense. Meditation is best understood when experienced and felt rather than when explained. And although this cannot be measured by words, maybe you will be able to grasp it more easily in the light of its purpose.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Why do people meditate? The prevailing reason is the search for inner peace, the peace of the soul. Peace, in this world of changes and in this race of life, is becoming more and more elusive.

In the search for things and possessions, many live a life of materialism, always looking forward into the future and seldom looking within them to monitor the state of their inner self.

And once they have finally decided to venture within, they find the various pieces of themselves in disarray. This is when meditation is often resorted to. Others meditate to contemplate the things around them, to look into the realities of their life, and to find the meaning of the world to which they belong.

The popularity of meditation varies among races, cultures, and religions. It may also be seen differently according to various people. Buddhism, a popular religion and philosophy that originated in Asia, places a great emphasis on Buddhism meditation as a way of discovering life’s meaning. To the Buddhists, meditation is associated with enlightenment.

Buddhists recognize the presence of sufferings in the world. But then, recognition is nothing without any intention to alleviate and free mankind from this plague. This is therefore the ultimate purpose of Buddhism meditation – to free man from pain and agony.

To be able to do this, one must know what causes pain and suffering. This is basically brought about by man’s endless desires and expectations from the world, from the people around him, and from life itself. Expectation usually breeds despair, and this is what man must conquer. He must stop expecting from the world.

To meditate is to be enlightened, to see things in the light of reality.

Life is not a bed of roses; it is an ever-changing sphere. To live life fully and to enjoy the freedom of living, one must control his cravings and desires. Only when this is achieved will man be able to know that life is not actually as complicated as he has come to believe.

Meditation, at its best, is a great tool to help you find inner peace, and to preserve it, no matter how frustrating the outside world can be. Given the right motivation and the right purpose, this activity is one that will keep you focused on the truth that you need to know about life to keep you living healthy and satisfied.

Is Buddhist meditation a religion in itself or simply a mind exercise like most others? While Buddhist meditation is not a religion, it is inspired by the goals of the Buddhism religion. After all, the human mind is the heart of the Buddhist teaching. The Dhamma, or the teaching of the Buddha, is probably the most misunderstood among all other religions.

The Buddha is also being likened to God and people have considered the Buddhist meditation as a hypnotic method to flee from the real world. There are eight noble truths involve in Buddhism.

The first noble truth is the dukkha, a Pali word which means the unpleasant experiences like worry, pain, sorrow, fear, etc.

The second noble truth points out that dukkha are the consequence of desire and craving.

The third noble truth says that dukkha can be resolved, while the fourth noble truth tells us the means by which the third noble truth can be achieved.

Buddhism, through the fourth noble truth is then closely linked to Buddhist meditation. It was transformed into a method or discipline of releasing people from the bondage of negative feelings and enhancing the nature of human life.

This part of the Dhamma is known as the Noble Eightfold Path, which encompasses lessons that can influence the personal and social aspect of one’s life. It may be understood therefore that the cause of everyone’s agony is psychological. Logic would tell us that the cure would be psychological as well.

Thus, Buddhism designed mind exercises called the Buddhist meditation, aimed to cure these psychological problems. However, the Buddhist meditation is often confused with other practices that that claim to have possessed powers after engaging in meditation, which is totally in contrast to the Eightfold Path. Some people view meditation, Buddhist meditation included, as a higher state of the pious life.

That meditation is a step towards sainthood or being a holy person. Meditation is not an act of converting a sinner to have a deeper commitment to his religion. But it is just a good instrument to free oneself from the clutter that fills the mind in order to have a more serene life.

The goals of Buddhist meditation do not differ much from the other methods of meditation. Specifically though, Buddhist meditation aims to get rid of the dukkha and attain Nibbana.

According to many Buddhist meditation practitioners, Nibbana is too difficult to put into words. But they describe it as the highest point of moral and psychological maturation. Since Buddhist meditation, like any other meditation technique, is a personal experience which brings about self-fulfillment, it must be practiced according to one’s conviction and faith that enlightenment and bliss are attainable.

It’s like a trip to the gym for your brain – by focusing the mind on a single thought or image, even for only 10 or 20 minutes each day, you’re body relaxes, our mind becomes clear, and stressful problems become easier to manage. Why meditation has a measurable effect on mind and body To understand how meditation works, it helps to understand how the brain functions. This is unfortunate, because meditation is a simple, effective stress management tool that can be used by a anyone – and solid medical research has shown that meditation is highly effective as a way to lower stress and even manage pain.

It’s particularly effective at the end of a long, stressful day – you can set aside a short period when you get home from work, meditate, and then enjoy your evening with a clear mind and more relaxed body.

Why meditation is great for stress
One of the pioneers of serious meditation research was Harvard’s Dr. Herbert Benson, who’s 1968 book “The Relaxation Response” showed that meditation had a measurable affect on stress, slowing breathing and heartbeat and lessening the body’s natural fight-or-flight response. Meditation will allow you to relax your body and focus your thoughts, thus focusing your mind and allowing you to let go of the day’s troubles. It allows your body to refresh its resources, which is good for your immune system, your blood pressure and your mental outlook.

When you meditate, your heart rate and breathing slow down, your blood pressure normalizes, and you use oxygen more efficiently. Your adrenal glands produce less cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline and you produce good, healing. Your mind clears, allowing you harper thought and greater creativity. Meditation has proved beneficial for people trying to give up smoking, drinking and drugs.

Simple meditation for anyone
Meditation isn’t a mystical, mysterious practice. It’s easy to do, and doesn’t take any special equipment or training. Meditation involves sitting in a relaxed position and clearing your mind. There are a number of methods for meditation – you can focus on a sound (like “om”), or on your own breathing, or on an object, or on nothing at all. You just need at least 10 minutes of quiet, free of distraction, although some people find that, with practice, they can meditate anywhere.

Here’s a couple of basic techniques:
1) Simple Breathing Meditation
Find a quiet room, and sit in a comfortable position, either on the floor or in a chair. Close your eyes.

Consciously relax the muscles in your feet, then your calves, and work way up your body until everything is loose.

Now focus your attention on your breathing. Breathe in deeply through your nose, and then let your breath out through your mouth. Count your breaths, and say the number of the breath as you let it out, which helps you to focus your mind and avoid distraction.

Do this for 10 or 20 minutes, then allow yourself to slowly come back up to full speed.

2) Focused Object Meditation
Choose an object, any object – a vase of flowers, a burning candle, a beautiful piece of fabric with a complex design. It can even be a coffee mug or a lamp.

Examine the shape, colors, shadow and light, texture movement of the object. Breathe deeply and rhythmically, and let your mind go wherever it wants, but stay focused on the object. Allow yourself at least 10 minutes to examine every detail.

3) Focused Sound Meditation.
Make a sound, over and over, focusing entirely on the vibration and tone. The classic meditation sound is “Om,” the Sanskrit word for perfection. Use the same rhythmic breathing to help slow your heartbeat and focus your mind.

4) Focused Imagery Meditation
Here, you create a mental image in your mind of a happy, relaxing place. You could be on a tropical beach, or floating on a raft in a mountain lake, or even lying in a king-sized bed in a luxury hotel – whatever you find the most calm and restful to think about. Breathe in and out, slowly and rhythmically. As thoughts enter your mind, let them drift back out – focus entirely on your “happy place as you breathe.

Unlike the use of prescription medication and herbal therapies, there are no potential side effects to meditation, and it doesn’t cost anything. No special equipment is required, and you can meditate no matter what your physical limitations. It does take some commitment and patience, but after a few sessions, you’ll find that meditation is a wonderful method for relieving stress – and you can do it anywhere!

A distinguished meditation master came to town these past weeks. Both myself and my pal happened to stumble upon the notification of his arrival to give teachings in our mailbox.

We don’t check our mails regularly and when being presented with such news of so and so meditation masters or teachers coming to town to give teachings etc…we don’t always flock to these types of teachings as if we are hungry wolves. I have a tendency to listen to my inner voice, to decide which and what kind of meditation teachings to go for. Many times, learning too many meditation methods may not be so good for oneself; it all depends on individuals and their learning curves.

Some of us can do very well with just one or two meditation techniques, others may need to go for and receive more teachings. Some need to meditation alone for maximum benefits; while others need group meditation practice to sustain the practice and sessions…there is no wrong or right about this.

So this time round, i listened to my own inner voice again. And both myself and my pal decided to go for this teaching - the Phowa meditation method. One needs to be initiated in order to receive and practise this type of meditation method. The master is quite a distinguished rinpoche. I even consulted my tarot cards!(learn the tarot reading methods from TarotReadingSecrets.com , they even have some high quality free tarot reading for those of you who are interested.)

The cards are positive; it is quite clear that it would be auspicious if we go for the teachings! It is a good learning meditation experience; and we feel very blessed and fortunate to be able to receive such a rare teaching, especially from an authentic meditation and buddhist master!
